There are still a good number of fell ponies to be found grazing on the high fells of Cumbria, the North Pennines and the Lake District. Whilst their numbers have generally declined, if you know where to look, it is still possible to come across them in the quieter parts of the county. If you are  patient, they soon get used to you and may allow you to spend some quality time in their presence. This is highly recommended! They are also tough, resilient animals - capable of enduring the harsh weather conditions which frequently occur on the fells. I include a couple of close-ups of their thick coat, which is ideally suited to retain warmth and fend off rain and snow.
